About Lewis Latimer

Lewis Howard Latimer (September 4, 1848 – December 11, 1928) was a pioneering American inventor and patent draftsman. Among his notable inventions were an evaporative air conditioner, an enhanced method for producing carbon filaments used in light bulbs, and an improved toilet system designed for railroad cars. Joining the Edison Electric Light Company in 1884, Latimer served as a draftsman, contributing significantly to the development of incandescent light bulbs by revolutionizing the design of carbon filaments. His innovations markedly increased the bulb's efficiency, rendering it more practical for widespread use and substantially contributing to the accessibility and affordability of electric lighting. Although Thomas Edison is commonly associated with the invention of the practical incandescent light bulb, Latimer's indispensable contributions played a vital role in advancing the technology.

The Lewis H. Latimer House, his historic former residence, stands near the Latimer Projects at 34-41 137th Street in Flushing, Queens, New York City. This landmark pays homage to Latimer's enduring legacy and his pivotal role in shaping the landscape of modern lighting technology.
